Creating a Study in Omics Studio
This guide walks new users through the process of creating a Study within an existing project in Omics Studio. A study in Omics Studio is an analysis workspace tied to a specific dataset; it defines which files are analysed together and stores the results of downstream analyses.
1. Open the Projects & Studies page
- Log in to your Omics Studio workspace. From the Workspace navigation pane, select Projects & Studies.
- Locate the project that will contain your new study. Expand the project row if necessary.
- In the Studies header row of the project, click the plus (+) button. This opens the study creation dialog.
2. Provide a study title and dataset
- In the Create a New Study dialog, enter a descriptive study title. A title between 2 and 150 characters is required.
- Under Select Dataset, click the dataset drop-down and choose the dataset you want to analyse. Only datasets associated with the project are shown; for example, Dataset – September 17, 2025.
3. Select files for the study
- Click Next to move to the Select the Files to Include in This Study step. The dialog lists all files that belong to the chosen dataset, grouped by type (e.g., Expression Matrix, Statistics, Feature Metadata).
- Check the boxes next to each file you want to include in the study. For most omics datasets you should select:
ExpressionMatrix.csv(contains the expression or abundance values)Statistics1.csv,Statistics2.csv,Statistics3.csv(statistical results or contrasts)FeatureMetadata.csv(annotations for features such as genes or proteins)SampleMetadata.csv(metadata for samples; this option becomes available after selecting an expression or statistics file)
- The counter at the top of the dialog shows how many files have been selected out of the total. Select all required files so the counter reads “6/6 files selected”.
- Click Create Study to finalise. Note that file selections cannot be changed after creation, so ensure you have selected the correct files.
4. Verify study creation
After you click Create Study, Omics Studio returns to the project’s Studies list. Your new study will appear in the list with its title and organism or omics-type information. You can now open the study to configure preferences, run analyses, and explore results.
Tips and considerations
- Study titles should be meaningful, such as a date or experimental description. They help differentiate multiple studies within the same project.
- Datasets and files are fixed for a study. If you need to analyse a different set of files, create another study.
- If the Create Study button is disabled, ensure you have selected at least one expression matrix or statistics file and that all required metadata files are selected.
- To cancel the process at any time, click Cancel (or the X in the top-right of the dialog) to return to the project without creating a study.
By following these steps, you can create a new study in Omics Studio and prepare your dataset for further analyses such as Over-Representation Analysis or Gene Set Enrichment Analysis.
